Farmers Market Week, Kids Health & Fun, Illegal Chickens in New Oxford, Local Icecream, and Events This Weekend

Last week I had the pleasure of working from home due to an office move, so I was able to enjoy the Wednesday Farmers Market at the Rec Park in Gettysburg.  There are a few vendors I don’t usually get to shop with so I was excited to try them out.  One of these vendors was Grandma Marshall’s Homemade Soap & Such where I purchased two large bars of organic soap (Eggnog and Hot Apple Pie).  I’ve been enjoying them all week 🙂

Another new vendor that is supposed to be vending at the Saturday markets now is “Restore Your Soles“, lavender bath & body products.  She gave me a sample of her “ocean lotion” and I am hooked.  It smells like a relaxing sandy summer morning.  Stop by her canopy if you’re at the market and try a sample, it smells divine.

This particular Wednesday also had the added bonus of being “Kids Market Day & Health Fair“.  There were kids of all ages enjoying market goodies when I arrived on Wednesday.  From yoga to scout information, trading in their own market “chips” for goodies at the vendors, which teaches them to spend their “chips” wisely, artwork, and fun & games.  And even though I do not yet have children, I was happy to support such a healthy and educational event for our local youth.

Did you get a chance to participate

We’ve been asked to participate in the Adams County Farmers Market blog, so look for future posts from here there as well sometime soon 🙂

Local food and growing in GettysburgNational Farmers Market Week!

That’s right, this week is National Farmers Market Week from August 4th through the 10th.  Eating good wholesome local food is better for you, the environment, and our local Adams County economy.  Won’t you stop by the market today in the Rec Park, or at the Outlets this Saturday and see what your local community is selling for you 🙂  Donald and I will be at the market early Saturday in our cowboy hats, so don’t hesitate to stop and say hi 🙂

While visiting Terry at Woollyboogers Icelandic Sheep vendor at the Outlets this past Saturday, he told me he had some new customers stop by that said they had heard about him through Gettysburg Wire!  Donald and I were so excited when we heard, and are so glad that you guys are trying out your local economy and businesses.  That is our entire goal here at Gettysburg Wire, supporting local business, farms, and artisans.  Each week we’ll be visiting someone new and telling you about them here as well as what events are going on that may interest local residents.  Gettysburg just rocks!

Backyard Chickens in New Oxford, Becoming Illegal?

The Evening sun posted a recent news article about how more municipalities are outlawing the keeping of backyard chickens in certain boroughs.  New Oxford residents may facet this dilemma here soon, even though the practice of keeping backyard chickens is growing in popularity as more people fight against processed foods and partake in growing their own food or purchasing wholesome local foods from farmers.

Right now the officials in New Oxford are working on a proposal to make it illegal to keep fowl in the borough limits.  This was presented Monday at the borough’s meeting.  My personal feelings on this is allowing a limit of fowl, but not making them entirely illegal.  The concern seems to be directed at potential early morning noise threats, but having laying hens and having roosters are entirely different and could be specified in the ordinance instead.

The ordinance has to be advertised prior to being brought to a vote, so if this is an issue that New Oxford residents feel strongly about, I recommend getting involved in this before the vote is made.

Best Local Homemade Icecream?

Donald and I went to Mr. G’s a bit ago to try out their homemade ice-cream at the recommendation of the kind folks at Round Barn Farm.  I grew up on Hoffman’s Ice-cream in Westminster, which is still by far the best I’ve ever had, but let me tell you. Mr. G’s is definitely right up there on the scale of “heavenly” ice-cream.  I got their chocolate peanut butter, and Donald got their strawberry shortcake with a 150th anniversary Sarsaparilla.  We pretty much melted at the delectable tastes of all three, and agreed we had found our new local ice-cream haven.

Speaking of more “Best in Gettysburg“, the Gettysburg Times has their ballot out to vote for your favorite businesses in Adams County.  You can get your ballot here.
